BNP TEST/HEART FAILURE
B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) is a naturally occurring biochemical that helps protect the heart against stress. The BNP test is used by physicians to determine heart function and to determine if patients are in congestive heart failure.
BNP helps regulate fluid levels by increasing urine production, and lowers blood pressure by promoting relaxation of blood vessels, which decreases the amount of work the heart must do as it pumps blood around the body.
BNP tests determine levels of BNP in blood. Physicians use this information to determine the adequacy of patients’ hearts ability to pump blood and to rule out congestive heart failure. BNP tests help physicians to spot congestive heart failure early. BNP tests are medical equipment that is used in doctors’ offices and clinics on an outpatient basis.
