CARDIOVASCULAR ULTRASOUND

Cardiovascular ultrasound refers to using high-frequency sound waves to form images of the heart as it beats. Medical equipment manufacturers make cardiovascular ultrasound equipment to aid physicians in diagnosing heart abnormalities.

To obtain ultrasound images, a doctor or a technician holds a small device that emits high-frequency sound waves against the chest wall. The sound waves enter the chest cavity and bounce off structures in the heart.

The cardiovascular ultrasound equipment records the returning sound waves and a computer uses them to form images of the structures in the heart. Cardiovascular ultrasound is commonly performed in physician offices as an outpatient procedure.
