In 2009, the U.S. government passed the HITECH (Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health) Act as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The HITECH Act mandates that by 2014 doctors and hospitals must be using a certified EMR/EHR system, otherwise known as EMR/EHR compliant.
